A tragic event unfolded in Thailand's northeastern Mukdahan province on Thursday, resulting in the deaths of eight monks. An 11-year-old boy reportedly stole his parents' pickup truck and drove it into a procession of approximately 30 monks. The monks were walking along a roadside during a pilgrimage approximately 30 minutes into their 260-km journey.
Security footage captured the truck colliding with the monks, who were walking in a single line. Five monks died at the scene, with three more succumbing to their injuries later in the hospital. Ten other individuals were seriously injured, and several more sustained lighter wounds. Four monks remained in critical condition as of Thursday.
The boy is currently in custody. Police are investigating the incident, including forensic examination of the vehicle and questioning the child's parents to determine legal responsibility. Buddhist monks hold a revered status in Thailand, often participating in public processions and receiving alms.
