30 Jun
Summary
- Fisherman survived eight days adrift in the Pacific Ocean.
- He battled huge waves, bitter cold, and loneliness.
- Faith and prayer were his constant companions during the ordeal.

A fisherman from the Cook Islands, Junior Apiuta Apiuta, endured an harrowing eight-day period adrift in the Pacific Ocean. His solo fishing trip turned perilous when his small boat's engine failed on June 11, leaving him stranded.
During his time at sea, Apiuta faced extreme conditions, including towering waves that twice swept him overboard and relentless cold and rain. He subsisted on raw fish he caught and rainwater collected in a bucket, using a sheet and chilly bin for protection.
Despite the immense challenges and isolation, Apiuta maintained his faith and continued to pray for rescue. On the third day, a distant fishing vessel offered a glimmer of hope, though it eventually disappeared. His prayers were answered on the eighth day when a New Zealand air force plane located him, leading to his rescue by a Taiwanese fishing vessel on June 18.
Safely rescued, Apiuta was able to shower, eat, and contact his family, reassuring his partner he was safe. He plans to return to fishing, albeit with increased caution and a renewed appreciation for safety equipment and prayer.
