A 6-year-old boy, Avyaan Surya, lost his life after drowning in a 15-foot pit at the Kaladham Society in Greater Noida on Saturday. The pit, dug for boring work by the Greater Noida Authority, was filled with water and reportedly lacked adequate safety precautions such as barricades or warning signs.
Avyaan was playing cricket with friends when he fell into the deep pit. Alerted by his screams, residents quickly organized a rescue, jumping into the pit to retrieve him. Despite their efforts and immediate transport to a hospital, medical professionals declared him deceased.
Eyewitnesses and residents expressed strong allegations of negligence, stating that no one was aware of the dangerous pit's presence. The boy's father, an art teacher, is inconsolable, lamenting the loss of his son due to authorities' carelessness.
Officials from the Greater Noida Authority stated the boring work began two days prior without senior officials' full knowledge. They indicated that the contractor was responsible for insufficient barricading, citing it as grave negligence. The contractor has been arrested, and cases registered against supervisors.
