£400M Lawsuit After Superyacht Sinks, Killing Tech Tycoon

The Italian Sea Group (TISG), builder of the Bayesian superyacht, has filed a £400 million lawsuit against the widow of tech billionaire Mike Lynch. The superyacht tragically sank off the coast of Sicily on August 19, 2024, resulting in the deaths of Mike Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, and five other passengers.
TISG blames the crew's incompetence and negligence for the sinking, claiming the yacht was 'unsinkable' and that weather warnings were ignored. The company asserts it has lost millions in sales due to being blamed for the disaster. The lawsuit was filed in Termini Imerese, Sicily, against Revtom, the yacht's owner, and three crew members.
British investigators previously found the £30 million yacht was compromised by 80.6 mph winds, causing it to capsize. The Marine Accident Investigation Branch report indicated the crew were unaware of the yacht's specific vulnerabilities to strong winds. The sinking occurred rapidly, with the yacht listing violently and sinking in approximately 16 minutes.
A source close to the family criticized the lawsuit as cynical and opportunistic, designed to distract from unresolved questions about the yacht's design and stability. This legal action follows a previous, similar lawsuit filed by TISG, which the company later disavowed, stating it was filed without their knowledge or consent.
