4 Sep
Summary
- At least 37 people died from toxic fumes while stealing petrol.
- Over 100 people were involved in the incident at Okari Jetty.
- Pipeline theft is a long-standing problem in Nigeria's oil region.
At least 37 individuals have died in Nigeria's Rivers State following inhalation of toxic fumes during an alleged petrol theft operation. The incident unfolded at Okari Jetty, where an estimated 100 people reportedly used small boats to siphon refined petrol from a pipeline under the cover of darkness.
Local reports and an environmental group, the Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC), indicated that many more are still missing. The victims are said to have succumbed to fumes from what is locally known as "Indorama fuel," a type of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).
Pipeline theft has been a persistent problem for decades in Nigeria's Niger Delta, a region vital for the country's oil and gas reserves. Criminal groups tap into pipelines to siphon fuel for the black market or illegal refineries, contributing to environmental damage and economic loss.
Authorities, including the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Nigerian navy, have condemned the illegal activities and pledged to intensify operations against oil thieves. The government aims to increase oil production and attract investment, with increased maritime security operations now in place to combat widespread theft.
