A late-night card game in Gujarat's Bhavnagar district concluded tragically on Tuesday, August 19, 2026, when three men drowned after falling into an open agricultural well. The incident occurred as 11 men were playing cards in a field. Upon seeing an approaching vehicle, the group panicked and attempted to flee, fearing a police raid.
In the ensuing confusion and darkness, four men fell into a nearby open well. Three of them, identified as Rahul Popatbhai Chauhan, 35, Nilesh Dabhi, 37, and Ajitsinh, 45, lost their lives. One individual survived the fall. Police were alerted to the incident when a body was discovered the following morning.
Families of the deceased gathered at the hospital, asserting that a police raid had led to the deaths. However, senior police officials and the local Vartej police station have vehemently denied any raid took place. Authorities are investigating the sequence of events, suggesting the arrival of the unidentified vehicle may have triggered the panic, possibly due to a prank.
As of Tuesday, August 19, 2026, the families have refused to accept the bodies and are demanding an FIR against police officials, a claim the police continue to dispute.
