Tragedy struck the junior hockey community on Monday when three young players, Caden Fine, 17, from Birmingham, Alabama, and teammates Cameron Casorso and JJ Wright, both 18, from British Columbia, died in a severe vehicle crash. The incident occurred near Toronto as the players were en route to practice with the Southern Alberta Mustangs. Their passenger vehicle collided with a semi-truck carrying gravel, resulting in the immediate death of all three occupants. The driver of the semi-truck sustained minor injuries and received treatment at the scene.
The Southern Alberta Mustangs organization released a statement expressing deep sorrow, calling the players "more than hockey players -- they were teammates, sons, brothers, friends." Fine's passion for hockey began in 2020, and he had joined the Mustangs for the 2025-2026 season. In the wake of the tragedy, a GoFundMe page was established to support Fine's family, quickly raising over $10,000. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney also offered condolences to the families and the wider hockey community.
