Electrocution During Procession Kills Three
22 Oct
Summary
- Three young men died due to electrocution during an idol immersion procession.
- A lifted wire touched a high-tension power line, causing a deadly accident.
- Allegations of negligence at a local health center and regarding power line safety were raised.
A procession for idol immersion in Madhya Pradesh's Jabalpur district turned fatal on Wednesday around 1 am. Three young men died, and more than 10 people sustained burn injuries after a high-tension power line made contact with a wire being used to clear the path for the procession. The incident occurred in the Majhauli police station area as an idol was being transported for immersion.
A wire being lifted for the procession inadvertently touched a high-tension line. This contact caused the wire to snap and fall onto the tractor-trolley carrying people, resulting in electrocution. Two individuals died immediately, while a third succumbed to their injuries on Thursday morning.
Serious allegations of negligence have been raised, particularly concerning the response at the Majhauli health centre, where it is claimed no medical staff were present upon the injured's arrival. Furthermore, concerns about low-hanging power lines were reportedly discussed in a prior meeting between officials and the organizing committee, with the electricity department allegedly failing to take corrective action despite requests.
Victims of the electrocution included Vikas Rajput, 22, and Prince Chauhan, 23, who died at the scene. Several others, including Mayank Rajput, Vicky Raikwar, Manish Rajput, and Ayush Raikwar, suffered critical injuries and were transferred to Jabalpur Medical College for treatment.
