Tragedy struck early on Wednesday, December 3rd, when a devastating series of crashes occurred on Interstate 57 in Calumet Park, Illinois. The incident began shortly after midnight with a collision involving three vehicles. A short time later, a second crash unfolded as a different vehicle struck three individuals who were outside their vehicles from the initial accident.
Officials confirmed that three people were pronounced dead at the scene, with their identities currently withheld. In addition to the fatalities, at least five other individuals were transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Witnesses reported that an erratic driver in a black vehicle may have been involved, with speeds estimated at over 100 miles per hour.
All lanes of I-57 were closed for an extended period, reopening around 7:50 a.m. Illinois State Police are conducting a preliminary investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal collisions. Further details are expected as the investigation progresses.
