- Tragic conditions at sea complicated the rescue efforts.

A community in Withernsea, East Yorkshire, has collectively raised £20,000 for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) in the wake of a devastating tragedy. Three lives were lost on January 2, when 15-year-old Grace Keeling entered the water, followed by her mother Sarah Keeling and a passer-by, Mark Ratcliffe, who attempted to rescue her.
Inspired by the loss, Teresa Mansell, owner of MeAmora salon, launched a raffle on January 6. The initiative rapidly gained support from local businesses across Withernsea, Hedon, and Hull, demonstrating a strong community response to the heartbreaking events.
RNLI volunteer James Medcalf expressed profound gratitude, highlighting the significant impact the funds will have on the service's ability to save lives. He noted the exceptional community spirit shown in response to the severe weather conditions, which included 3m waves and strong winds, complicating the extensive search and rescue operation involving numerous emergency services.
This substantial donation will aid the RNLI in enhancing its services and continue its vital mission along the coast. The community's generosity underscores a shared commitment to supporting the brave volunteers who risk their lives to protect others.
