19 Apr
Summary
- Martin family vanished in 1958 while collecting Christmas greenery.
- Two daughters' bodies found; parents and eldest missing for decades.
- A 2024 dive discovery of a submerged car solved the enduring mystery.

The 66-year mystery of the Martin family, who disappeared in December 1958, has been definitively solved as a tragic accident. Kenneth, Barbara, and their three daughters vanished near the Columbia River Gorge while collecting Christmas greenery. Authorities later found the remains of two daughters, Virginia and Susan, downstream.
However, Kenneth, Barbara, and their eldest daughter Barbie remained missing for over six decades, fueling speculation and extensive searches. The breakthrough occurred in 2024 when a diver located a submerged 1954 Ford station wagon in the Columbia River, identified as belonging to the Martin family.
In 2025, further human remains were found near the wreckage. DNA analysis conclusively linked these remains to Kenneth, Barbara, and Barbie Martin, accounting for all five family members. The Hood River County Sheriff's Office has closed the case, confirming no criminal activity, bringing closure to a long-standing community enigma.
