In recent days, a somber discovery was made along the Libyan coast near Zuwara, a town situated west of Tripoli. Medics recovered at least 17 bodies, believed to be those of migrants who perished at sea.
The Zuwara shore, approximately 117 kilometers west of the capital, became the site where these remains were found. The Emergency Medicine and Support Center reported that 14 bodies have since been buried according to standard protocols. One individual was identified as being of Bangladeshi nationality and was claimed by their family in Tripoli.
Libya has long been a precarious transit country for migrants and refugees attempting to reach Europe. Since the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, individuals fleeing hardship and conflict have utilized dangerous overland and sea routes, with tragic outcomes frequently occurring.
Images shared by the medical center depicted grim scenes of medics carefully placing the bodies into white plastic bags before transferring them into ambulances, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
