Bricklayer's Fall Leads to Hefty £16,000 Fine
30 Jun
Summary
- A bricklayer fell over two metres through a gap in a balustrade.
- The fall resulted in head trauma, a stroke, and lasting impairments.
- The construction firm received a £16,000 fine for safety failures.

Sibbasbridge Limited was fined £16,000 by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) following a serious incident involving a bricklayer. In July 2024, Nicholas Crow, aged 65, fell more than two metres through an unprotected gap in a balustrade at a property on Binswood Street, Leamington Spa. The fall into a basement lightwell resulted in significant injuries, including head trauma and a stroke.
Mr. Crow now faces ongoing difficulties with writing, object manipulation, mobility, speech, and memory. His wife described the profound emotional toll the incident has taken, stating that his "best years have been taken away." An HSE investigation confirmed that Sibbasbridge Limited neglected to establish appropriate measures to prevent falls from height, leading to this substantial penalty.
