A tragic incident has resulted in significant jail sentences for two individuals involved in a fatal collision. Uways Hussain, aged 20, was sentenced to 11 years and eight months for causing death by dangerous driving. His passenger, Usmon Mahmood, received a 12-year and nine-month sentence for aiding and abetting the same offense. The court heard that on March 9, Hussain was driving at an excessive speed of 139mph in a 30mph zone on Kingsway when he collided with Sylvester Abayomi's car. Mr. Abayomi, 50, was killed instantly, having entered the junction on a green light.
Dashcam footage captured by Hussain and Mahmood documented their reckless behavior in the hours leading up to the crash. This included running red lights, weaving through traffic, and inhaling from balloons while traveling at speeds exceeding 130mph. The police described the disregard for speed limits as one of the worst they had encountered. Judge Nicholas Dean characterized the crash as "wholly unnecessary and entirely avoidable," stemming from a "sustained, deliberate and escalating course of highly dangerous conduct."
Sylvester Abayomi was remembered by his partner, Denise, as a "caring soul and gentle person" who was loved by all. The severity of the sentences reflects the extreme danger posed by the defendants' actions and the devastating loss of a life.
