A tragic road accident on December 6, 2022, in County Fermanagh resulted in the death of 13-year-old Caitlin Hogg. She sustained a traumatic brain injury after being hit by a car as she exited her school bus on Moher Road. The inquest, held at Enniskillen courthouse, concluded that Caitlin died on December 8, 2022, from these injuries.
Coroner Joe McCrisken detailed that Caitlin was returning home from Mount Lourdes Grammar School when the bus stopped across from her house. Despite the bus's amber warning lights, conditions were dimming, and Caitlin was visible for a mere 1.2 to 2.7 seconds before impact. The coroner determined this short window was insufficient for the approaching driver to avoid the collision, even with evasive action.
Caitlin's father, Bob Hogg, remembered his daughter as a beautiful, wise, and sociable child who brought joy to those around her. He expressed profound heartache and a desperate wish that no other family face such devastating loss. The coroner acknowledged the family's advocacy for road safety, emphasizing the vulnerability of pedestrians and children.
Evidence suggested the car was traveling at 45 mph or less, with no indication of excess speed. The driver's statement indicated they did not see Caitlin emerge from behind the bus until it was too late. The inquest also considered factors that might have affected Caitlin's perception of risk, such as the bus's presence and engine noise.
