A devastating accident on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway on Monday claimed thirteen lives and left sixteen others injured. The fatal incident occurred near Dhaniwari village when a pickup truck, reportedly traveling north on the wrong side, collided with oncoming traffic. The pickup was carrying approximately fifty people attending an engagement party.
A truck traveling south swerved to avoid the errant pickup. In the process, its container detached and fell onto the pickup truck, causing the fatalities. Investigations suggest the pickup driver may have been avoiding a designated U-turn located about a kilometer prior, opting instead for an illegal shortcut.
Authorities are concerned that the number of casualties could increase, as several of the injured individuals are reported to be in critical condition. The incident highlights the dangers of traffic rule violations on major highways.
