Fifty-seven passengers and two drivers were on board when the accident happened at 1 AM local time. Authorities confirmed that twelve individuals perished at the scene. Ten passengers are in serious condition and have been transferred to local hospitals in Eger, Debrecen, and Miskolc, while 37 others suffered minor injuries. The driver survived and is in custody.
Leaders from both Poland and Hungary expressed their condolences for the tragic loss of life. Polish prosecutors are leading the investigation into the crash. This incident echoes a similar fatal bus crash involving Polish pilgrims returning from the same shrine in 2002, which killed 20 people in Hungary, and another in Croatia in 2022 where 12 died.
