Wildfires Force Hundreds to Evacuate Across Newfoundland
8 Aug
Summary
- Three wildfires continue to burn out of control on Newfoundland
- Evacuation orders expanded to Ochre Pit Cove and Salmon Cove
- Firefighters building fire guards to contain the growing blazes
As of August 8th, 2025, three wildfires continue to burn out of control on the Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland, forcing hundreds of people across several communities to evacuate their homes. The largest of the fires, the Kingston fire, has grown to over 2,175 hectares in size and is still moving and torching trees, with firefighters working to build a fire guard on the southern end to contain its growth.
The fire near Holyrood is also still active, with plenty of hot spots and trees being torched, though it has remained steady at around 22 hectares. Evacuation orders have now been expanded to include the communities of Ochre Pit Cove and Salmon Cove as the fires continue to spread.
Firefighters are using preventative measures, including bulldozers and excavators, to clear vegetation and create fire guards around the blazes. However, the dry conditions and lack of significant rainfall in the forecast are making it challenging to bring the fires under control. The province has also implemented a fire ban and is increasing fines for those who violate it, as several bonfires were reported overnight despite the ban.

The wildfires have created poor air quality across the region, with Environment Canada issuing a special air quality statement for the north and northeastern Avalon Peninsula. A heat warning is also in effect, and residents are being advised to stay hydrated, close blinds, and use fans to stay cool as the fires continue to burn.
