UK to Hold Biggest Public Safety Drill in Nation's History
7 Aug
Summary
- Emergency alert drill to test UK's new warning system
- Alerts will be sent to mobile phones on September 7th
- System aims to save lives during extreme weather and emergencies

In a little over a month, the UK government will conduct a nationwide emergency alert drill, which a Cabinet minister has described as "one of the biggest public safety exercises" in the country's history. On September 7th, at around 3 PM, mobile phones connected to 4G and 5G networks will vibrate and emit a siren sound for up to 10 seconds, followed by a message on phone screens indicating that this is only a test.
The drill is part of the government's efforts to familiarize the public with the new Emergency Alerts system, which is designed to warn people of imminent danger to life, such as extreme weather events and wildfires. Since its initial test in April 2023, the system has already been used five times, including during major storms that threatened lives in various parts of the UK.
The upcoming drill will coincide with the 85th anniversary of the start of the Blitz, a poignant reminder of the importance of emergency preparedness. Officials have emphasized that the alerts could save lives in real-life emergencies, just like a fire alarm in one's home. They are urging the public to mark the date, spread the word, and consider how they would respond in a genuine crisis.
