Ranchi Submerged: Flooded Streets, Fallen Trees, and Desperate Residents
23 Aug
Summary
- Ranchi battered by heavy rains since last Friday
- Widespread waterlogging, fallen trees, and power outages
- Several neighborhoods cut off and shops unable to open

On August 23, 2025, the state capital of Ranchi was hit by a severe rainstorm that has been ongoing since last Friday. The city has been struggling with the aftermath, as the heavy downpour has led to battered roads, waterlogged colonies, fallen trees, and recurring power outages.
Several neighborhoods, including Dhurwa and Namkum, remained cut off for hours, and shopkeepers were unable to open their shutters. Commuters were stranded in long traffic jams, and all five gates of the Dhurwa dam had to be opened due to rising water levels. Many areas, such as Panchsheel Nagar, Ranchi railway station, and Kokar Road, remained submerged, with residents unable to step out as the lanes turned into ponds.
The situation has been dire, with residents reporting knee-deep water gushing into their homes and a large crack appearing beside the Jagannathpur Temple in Dhurwa. Traffic has been thrown into disarray, with long snarls reported at key choke points, and residents in Hindpiri and Peace Road complaining about the filth and garbage floating in the flooded vegetable markets.
