Summary
- 55-year-old man mauled to death by Pitbull in Chennai
- Dog owner failed to leash the animal, leading to fatal attack
- Neighbors had previously urged owner to shift the dog due to safety concerns

On August 18, 2025, a 55-year-old man was tragically killed in a Pitbull attack in Chennai's Jafferkhanpet area. The victim, identified as Karunakaran, was mauled to death by the dog, which was owned by a woman named Poongodi.
According to the police, the Pitbull was not leashed when it suddenly lunged at Karunakaran in a narrow residential street. In the ensuing struggle, the dog owner also suffered bite injuries while trying to restrain the animal. Poongodi is currently undergoing treatment and will be arrested for negligence once discharged.
Eyewitnesses recounted that the attack was particularly brutal, with the dog biting the victim's genital area. Neighbors revealed that they had previously urged the owner to shift the dog, citing safety concerns in the congested street, but their appeals went unheeded.
The Pitbull has since been captured by veterinary officials and sent for observation. Police confirmed that no formal complaints were lodged earlier against the owner, though residents had raised concerns with the Chennai Corporation.
This tragic incident comes close on the heels of other recent dog bite cases in the city, including a girl mauled by Rottweilers and an auto driver injured by two Rottweilers. In response, the Chennai Corporation is now considering stricter measures, such as mandatory muzzling of ferocious breeds in public spaces.
