On August 15, 2025, the Independence Day celebrations in Kolkata took an unexpected turn when 39 students participating in the parade at Red Road fell ill. The students, who were from various schools in the city, suffered from dehydration and other heat-related issues due to the hot and humid weather conditions.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who was the chief guest at the 79th Independence Day celebrations, immediately rushed to the state-run SSKM Hospital to check on the affected students. Addressing the media, Banerjee reassured that the children were now stable and had been served breakfast and lunch. She stated that the students faced a little difficulty due to the weather, but there was nothing to worry about.
Banerjee also mentioned that she had "pampered everyone by offering them sweets" and had even untied the hair of some girl students to help them feel more comfortable. The Chief Minister emphasized that the situation was under control and that the students were receiving the necessary medical attention.
This incident serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by participants in outdoor events during the hot and humid summer months in Kolkata. The authorities will likely review safety protocols and measures to ensure the well-being of students in future Independence Day celebrations.
