On July 31, 2025, American journalist Alec Luhn, 38, went missing after venturing out for a solo hike along a glacier in Norway's Folgefonna National Park. Luhn, a Wisconsin native, was on vacation with his family when he set out on the multi-day backpacking trip.
When Luhn failed to meet up with his relatives on Monday, August 4, his wife, Veronika Silchenko, reported him missing. Local officials immediately launched a search and rescue mission, but the operation was hampered by bad weather, forcing the team to suspend the search on Monday night.
The search resumed on Tuesday, August 5, with the help of volunteer search and rescue teams, police, K-9 units, and drones. However, the difficult terrain, poor visibility, rain, and high water levels continued to complicate the rescue efforts.
Finally, on Wednesday, August 6, the search crew located Luhn by helicopter and airlifted him to a hospital. Luhn, an experienced outdoorsman and climate journalist, was found alive after being missing for six days. Officials did not provide details on his condition.
Luhn, a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has reported for various news outlets, including The Guardian, The New York Times, and National Geographic.
