5 Sep
Summary
- Kulgam MLA demands neutral assessment to fix responsibility for flood damage
- Over 100 lives lost and crores in property damage in J&K due to recent floods
- Concerns raised over vanishing wetlands and inadequate environmental assessments

On September 5, 2025, Kulgam MLA M.Y. Tarigami, who also chairs the Environment Committee of the J&K Legislative Assembly, has called for a neutral, high-level assessment to identify culpability and fix responsibility for the recent floods that have ravaged public infrastructure, including dams and bridges, in Jammu and Kashmir.
The heavy rains and floods across several states in the past month have claimed over 100 lives and caused property damage worth crores in J&K. Tarigami has demanded an immediate, transparent third-party safety audit of all public infrastructure to uncover the reasons behind the devastation. He has also called for exemplary punishment for the land mafia and encroachers, whom he termed as "enemies of the people and the environment."
Tarigami expressed concerns over the vanishing wetlands in the region, citing the spending of over ₹240 crores on dredging and restoration projects that have had little impact. He warned that the 2014 floods were a "warning" that went unheeded, leading to the amplified destruction in 2025. The MLA urged the Government of India to provide adequate funds for relief and rehabilitation of the affected people in J&K.
