Fremont Resident Killed in Single-Vehicle Crash on US 20

On August 27, 2022, a tragic single-vehicle crash occurred on US 20 just west of Ohio 51 in Washington Township, Sandusky County. According to the Fremont Post's investigation, a 2013 blue Nissan Versa driven by Ernesto Chavez, 44, of Fremont, was traveling eastbound on US 20 when he suddenly went across the center median and off the north side of the highway.
Chavez's vehicle struck a mailbox and a barn before coming to a final rest. Tragically, Chavez sustained fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene. His 10-year-old right rear passenger, however, survived the incident but sustained serious injuries. The child was transported to Mercy Health Saint Vincent Medical Center and was listed in stable condition.
Both Chavez and his passenger were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. The Ohio State Highway Patrol, assisted by the Sandusky County Sheriff's Office, Sandusky County EMS, Lindsey Volunteer Fire Department, the Sandusky County Coroner's Office and Bubba's Towing, responded to the scene. The investigation into the cause of the crash remains ongoing.
