On Thursday, August 24th, 2025, a tragic incident occurred in Dumka, Jharkhand, where four teenage friends drowned while bathing in the Mayurakshi river. The victims, identified as Krishna Singh, Aryan Thakur, Krish Kumar, and Aryan Kumar, were all between the ages of 16 and 17 and residents of different localities in Dumka town.
The incident took place near Haripur pipra village, under the Jama police station limits. According to local sources, the four friends had left their homes around 3 pm on Thursday. When they failed to return home for a long time, their parents began searching for them. It was only after the villagers spotted clothes and slippers on the riverbank that they informed the police, and a rescue operation was launched on Friday morning.
Tragically, all four bodies were recovered on Friday by local divers engaged by the district administration. The area where the incident occurred is known as "mini Goa" due to its picturesque setting, but it has a history of such tragedies. In 2016, six students had drowned in the same location, and five bodies were recovered.
Dumka Superintendent of Police Pitambar Singh Kherwar expressed his condolences and appealed to the public to be cautious while venturing near water bodies, especially during the monsoon season when water levels are high and the conditions can be dangerous.
