Disposable BBQs Ignite Destructive Grass Fire in Bristol

On August 24th, 2025, a large grass fire broke out on the Stoke Park Estate in Bristol, causing significant damage to the local environment. The blaze, which was ignited by two disposable BBQs, quickly spread through the 270-acre park, destroying wildlife habitats and conservation projects that had been carefully cultivated over time.

According to Avon Fire and Rescue Service, their crews had dealt with 14 grass fires in Bristol and North Somerset on the same day, with several of them being deliberately started. Park ranger Ash Kent, who was working nearby, described the speed at which the fire traveled through the dry grass as "immense," and said that if he hadn't been there to alert the fire service, the damage could have been much worse.

Conservationist Steve England, who lives on the edge of the park, emphasized the importance of using common sense during heatwaves, stating that "you don't have a naked flame on dry grass during a heatwave." While the fire caused some ecological damage, he noted that the park would likely recover, as the blaze had primarily burned off dead grass, allowing the area to regenerate.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for increased vigilance and responsible behavior when it comes to outdoor activities, especially in areas with dry, flammable vegetation.
