As of August 17, 2025, the Yamuna River in Delhi is flowing well above the "warning" level of 204.5 meters and is likely to cross the "danger" level of 205.33 meters in the next two days. According to the Central Water Commission (CWC), the water level is forecast to touch 205.70 meters by 8 PM on Monday and reach 206 meters by 2 AM on Tuesday.
The situation has been exacerbated by the record-breaking discharge from the Hathnikund Barrage. On Sunday, the hourly discharge peaked at 178,996 cusecs, the highest this season and nearly triple the previous peak of 65,861 cusecs recorded on August 14. The Yamuna was flowing at 204.60 meters at 7 PM on Sunday, after touching a season-high of 205.28 meters earlier.
Authorities have warned that evacuation from low-lying areas will commence once the water level reaches 206 meters. Announcements are already being made in these regions, urging people to vacate and move to higher ground. A particular warning is issued when the discharge crosses 100,000 cusecs, which occurred on Sunday afternoon.
