Deadly Downpours Devastate Uttarakhand, Leaving Trails of Destruction

On August 29, 2025, torrential rains have caused widespread devastation in several parts of Uttarakhand, a Himalayan state in northern India. The downpour has claimed the lives of 5 people, while 11 others remain missing. Authorities have issued travel advisories for pilgrims and tourists in 11 districts as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued orange and red alerts for different locations in the state.
In a separate incident, the Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor, who also chairs the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB), has constituted a three-member committee to investigate a landslide that claimed the lives of 34 pilgrims on August 26. The tragic incident has sparked growing criticism.
The heavy rain has also lashed the national capital, Delhi, leaving large parts of the city waterlogged, disrupting traffic, and triggering the collapse of an abandoned house, trapping and injuring three children. According to the IMD, Safdarjung, a weather station in Delhi, recorded 56.2 mm of rain in just three hours.
