In a significant development, the court of additional district and sessions judge Vikrant Kumar has sentenced Charanjit Singh alias Kala and Gurcharan Singh to life imprisonment for the murder of Jagdish Singh in Banur in February 2017. The verdict comes after a prolonged trial, with both the prosecution and defense presenting their arguments.
According to the prosecution, the incident occurred on February 19, 2017, when Jagdish Singh, the son of complainant Amir Chand, was eating kulcha with his friend Varinder Singh alias Rinku. An altercation broke out after Gurmail Singh's motorcycle allegedly brushed against Jagdish Singh. Charanjit Singh then arrived and allegedly slapped Jagdish Singh, leading to the police being called.
Later, Charanjit Singh returned with others, armed with weapons like sticks, axes, and motorcycle chains, and attacked Jagdish Singh and Rinku. Jagdish Singh was stabbed in the stomach with an axe and succumbed to his injuries at a hospital in Chandigarh. Charanjit Singh also allegedly assaulted Rinku.
After evaluating the evidence, the court has now convicted Charanjit Singh and Gurcharan Singh of murder and related charges, sentencing them to life imprisonment. This verdict serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of resorting to violence over minor disputes.
