Tourists Attacked with Paint Thinner, Set Ablaze in Bangkok

On August 4th, 2025, two Malaysian tourists were the victims of a shocking attack in Bangkok, Thailand. Around 10 PM, 26-year-old Ong Yik Leong and 27-year-old Gan Xiao Zhen were sitting on the steps of a popular shopping center when they were approached from behind by a 30-year-old suspect. The man, identified as former boxer Varakorn Pubthaisong, poured paint thinner from a plastic bottle over the two victims and then set them on fire.

The pair fled in shock but were chased down by the attacker. Members of the public intervened, and police detained Mr. Varakorn at the scene. During questioning, the suspect admitted to the attack, citing stress over recently losing his job as a security guard.

The victims were rushed to the hospital with serious burn injuries. Mr. Ong sustained second-degree burns across his upper body, while Ms. Gan suffered second-degree burns covering 36% of her body. Both are now in critical but stable condition, receiving treatment. Their families are expected to arrive in Bangkok on August 11th to provide support.

Police are preparing to formally charge the suspect with assault and will take statements from the victims once their medical condition permits. The attack was reportedly captured on video, though authorities have not yet confirmed whether the footage will be released.
