On September 6, 2025, the state of Tamil Nadu marked its inaugural Police Day celebrations, with a range of events and programs organized across the state. The day commemorates the enactment of the Madras District Police Act of 1859, which laid the foundation for the modern system of policing in the region.
At the Tamil Nadu Police Headquarters in Chennai, the celebrations began with a special screening on the history of the state's police force. In his keynote address, the Director General of Police (DGP)/Head of Police Force (HoPF) (Incharge) K. Venkataraman underscored the significance of the day, urging the police personnel to rededicate themselves to the ideals of duty, honor, and service. He emphasized the importance of upholding justice without fear or favor, maintaining discipline and integrity, and serving the public with compassion.
Across the state, various programs were held to mark the occasion. These included the administration of the police pledge in all police stations, homage paid to police martyrs, public outreach initiatives, and cultural events involving police families and the community. The celebrations aimed to strengthen the bond between the police force and the citizens they serve.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin had earlier announced that September 6 would be observed as Police Day every year in Tamil Nadu, recognizing the crucial role of the police in maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety of the people.
