On August 21, 2025, a 65-year-old woman named Nandita Basu was found dead in her Beleghata home in Kolkata. According to the police, Nandita's son Mainak, who was unemployed, had a major argument with his mother and allegedly assaulted her brutally, leading to her death.
Nandita's family claimed that Mainak had been suffering from schizophrenia, though the police were yet to confirm this. Mainak has been arrested and will undergo a psychiatric examination on August 24th to determine his mental state.
Nandita had been living with her son Mainak after the death of her husband Kamal, who owned a garment manufacturing unit, in 2006. Nandita's nephews and nieces were reportedly taking care of the mother-son duo and they also had some earnings from renting out their property.
