In a major anti-drug operation, the Punjab Police conducted raids at 301 locations across the state on August 16, 2025, arresting 38 suspected drug smugglers. The raids were carried out on the orders of the Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav, with over 100 police teams comprising more than 900 personnel under the supervision of 70 gazetted officers.
The crackdown resulted in the recovery of 620-gm heroin and 1,612 intoxicating tablets and capsules from the possession of the arrested individuals. Additionally, the police teams checked 316 suspicious persons during the day-long operation, with 33 of them convinced to undergo de-addiction and rehabilitation treatment.
The Punjab government has enforced a three-pronged strategy - enforcement, de-addiction, and prevention (EDP) - to tackle the drug menace in the state. The latest raids are a part of this comprehensive approach, which has led to the arrest of a total of 25,909 drug smugglers in the past 168 days.
