- Dispersal orders and face covering bans used by police to control protests

On August 3rd, 2025, authorities have charged a total of 11 individuals in relation to the ongoing protests outside a migrant hotel in Epping, Essex. The charges, brought by the Crown Prosecution Service, include violent disorder and criminal damage.
The unrest began on July 13th, 2025, after an asylum seeker was accused of attempting to kiss a 14-year-old girl. Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu, 38, has denied the sexual assault allegation and is set to stand trial later this month.
In response to the protests, Essex Police have taken several measures to maintain order, including issuing dispersal orders that give officers the power to direct anyone suspected of anti-social behavior to leave the area. The force has also utilized Section 60AA orders, which allow them to prevent protesters from wearing face coverings.
Among those charged are Charlie Land, 23, who faces violent disorder and criminal damage charges, and Luke Fleming, 21, who has been charged with violent disorder. They are scheduled to appear in Chelmsford Magistrates' Court on Monday. An additional 9 individuals have already been charged by the CPS for their alleged involvement in the unrest.
The ongoing situation in Epping highlights the tensions and challenges surrounding the accommodation of asylum seekers in local communities. As authorities work to maintain public order, the legal proceedings against those accused of violent disorder and criminal damage are expected to continue in the coming weeks.
