In a concerning security breach, a pregnant Bangladeshi prisoner named Rubina Irshad Sheikh escaped from Mumbai's JJ Hospital on August 14. Rubina, who was five months pregnant, was arrested by Vashi Police on August 7 for obtaining an Indian passport using a fake birth certificate.
Rubina was charged under several sections of the Indian Penal Code, as well as the Passport Act and the Foreigners Act, and was sent to Byculla Women's Jail. On August 11, she was taken to JJ Hospital for a medical checkup and treatment of a fever, cold, and skin infection.
However, during the afternoon of August 14, Rubina managed to give the police escorting her the slip. She pushed a constable and fled, taking advantage of the hospital crowd. Mumbai Police has now launched a city-wide search operation to locate the escaped prisoner.
