Summary
- Off-duty NYPD officer involved in fatal shooting
- Shooting occurred on Sunday night in Washington Heights
- Alleged gunman, 30, was pronounced dead at hospital

On the evening of August 17, 2025, an off-duty NYPD officer was involved in a fatal shooting in the Washington Heights neighborhood of New York City. According to police, the incident occurred just after 9:45 PM on West 173rd Street and Amsterdam Avenue.
The off-duty officer was standing outside a residential building when he was approached by two men riding separate mopeds. One of the men allegedly got off his moped, asked the officer a question, and then pulled out a firearm. In response, the off-duty officer drew his own weapon and fired multiple shots at the man.
The alleged gunman, a 30-year-old individual, was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The second man fled the scene on his moped. Police recovered a loaded 9mm firearm at the site of the shooting.
The off-duty officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was also transported to a hospital for treatment. This incident marks the second deadly shooting involving an off-duty NYPD officer in just over 48 hours. Earlier this weekend, an off-duty officer fatally shot a 44-year-old man on Staten Island.
Investigations into both shootings are ongoing, and authorities have not yet released the identities of the deceased individuals. The incidents have raised concerns about the use of force by off-duty officers and the need for further training and protocols to ensure public safety.
