Notorious Chain Snatchers Apprehended in Dramatic GIDA Encounter

On July 31st, two motorcycle-borne criminals targeted a woman named Sumitra Tiwari, who runs a roadside eatery in Gorakhpur. As Tiwari sat with her daughter, the men approached and one of them bought a water bottle for Rs 20. While leaving, the other man snatched Tiwari's gold chain from her neck.
Following the incident, the police scanned CCTV footage and identified the accused as Shiva Jatav and Ashwani Kumar, both residents of Auraiya district. On August 2nd, acting on a tip-off, the police laid a trap near the Deiyapar turn in the GIDA area of Gorakhpur. When signaled to stop, the accused opened fire at the police team. In the retaliatory firing, both Jatav and Kumar sustained bullet injuries to their legs.
The two criminals were arrested and taken to the district hospital for treatment. Superintendent of Police (North) Jitendra Srivastava confirmed the arrests and said the accused have confessed to the chain-snatching crime. The police recovered a mobile phone, the stolen gold chain, two country-made pistols, ammunition, and the motorcycle used in the incident. A case has been registered under relevant sections of the IPC and Arms Act, and further investigation is ongoing.
