On June 3, 2025, a 3-year-old girl from Kanpur went missing after being lured away by her neighbor, Sunil Kumar, with the promise of candy. The child's father immediately reported the incident to the police, and suspicion fell on Sunil. During the police operation, Sunil fired at the officers, resulting in a retaliatory shot that injured his leg.
The child was found in a critical condition in a nearby forest and taken for medical examination, which revealed seven visible injuries. She was admitted to a hospital in Kanpur, where she tragically passed away on June 12. The investigation led to Sunil's indictment on June 14, and 11 witnesses testified against him. Sunil's defense statements were recorded on August 4, followed by arguments on August 8.
After hearing both sides, the special Pocso judge in Banda, Pradeep Kumar Mishra, convicted Sunil of rape and murder on September 6, 2025. The judge sentenced him to death and imposed a fine of Rs 65,000 for other charges. The judge's 74-page decision categorized the crime as "extremely rare." Sunil's parents were present in court during the pronouncement of the verdict, and heavy police presence was maintained in the court complex. The victim's mother and grandfather were also present in the court.
