On August 25, 2025, the Khadakpada police station in Kalyan, under the Thane police, has uncovered a massive interstate drug supply network stretching nearly 1,800km from Maharashtra to the dense forests of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. The police have arrested a total of 13 people, including small-time peddlers and wholesale suppliers, and seized over 115kg of ganja.
The investigation began earlier this month when two local drug suppliers were caught selling ganja in Ambivli near Kalyan. This led the deputy commissioner of police (Kalyan Zone), Atul Zende, to form a special team that gradually traced the supply chain all the way to the Visakhapatnam forest region.
The accused would bring ganja from the remote forest areas of the Andhra Pradesh-Odisha border, where some villagers cultivated it. They would then transport the drugs to different parts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, Thane, Pune, and Solapur. To avoid detection in the forest, the accused relied on walkie-talkie devices for communication in areas with no mobile network.
During the raid, the accused even attempted to threaten the officers with a revolver, but the joint team managed to overpower and arrest them. The police also recovered two walkie-talkie sets, one revolver with two live cartridges, and five different vehicles used in the crime, with a combined value of Rs 80 lakh.
This latest 1,800km-long pursuit is seen as a milestone in dismantling one of the biggest inter-state ganja supply chains operating in Maharashtra. Over the last six months, the Kalyan region of Thane Police has registered 60 cases, arrested more than 100 people, and seized drugs worth crores of rupees.
