Fly-Tippers Punished for Illegal Dumping in Kirklees Cemeteries and Woodlands
2 Aug
Summary
- Two fly-tippers caught dumping waste in Kirklees
- Shane Ray charged customers for waste collection but dumped it illegally
- Maryam Bi caught on CCTV dumping damp carpet in Dewsbury

In the past year, two individuals have been punished by the courts in Kirklees, West Yorkshire, for their involvement in illegal fly-tipping activities.
Shane Ray, a 35-year-old from Huddersfield, had been charging customers for household waste collection but was instead leaving their rubbish in cemeteries and woodlands. He pleaded guilty to 15 offenses at Kirklees Magistrates' Court in June and was given a 16-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months. Ray had been promoting his services on Facebook under his own name or as "Allltrades2You" between April 2024 and March 2025, and was caught on CCTV dumping waste in council skips at Almondbury Cemetery.
Meanwhile, 51-year-old Maryam Bi from Dewsbury was caught when a letter addressed to her was discovered in a bin bag she had unloaded from her BMW in Ravensthorpe. CCTV footage showed Bi dumping damp carpet on Park Road in Dewsbury. She pleaded guilty to fly-tipping in July and was ordered to pay fines and costs of over £1,000.
Kirklees councillor Amanda Pinnock emphasized the council's zero-tolerance approach to fly-tipping, stating that it is "unsightly, can cause vermin infestation and negatively affects our beautiful wildlife and environment." The council investigates every incident of illegal dumping to identify the perpetrators and take enforcement action.
