On August 26th, 2025, an NHS nurse of Filipino descent was the target of a disturbing racist attack while at Manor Heath Park in Halifax, West Yorkshire. The nurse, Apple Moorhouse, has been working in the NHS for the past 12 years and is a British resident of 15 years.
The incident occurred when Moorhouse asked a couple walking a dog to control their pet, as it was making her 6-year-old daughter feel "unsafe and scared". In response, the couple hurled water at Moorhouse and grabbed her hair, questioning whether she had come to Britain by "rubber boat". The situation escalated, and Moorhouse was dragged by the hair and pushed to the ground by a woman claiming to also be a nurse.
As a result of the assault, Moorhouse suffered a pulled rib and bruised hands. She has expressed that she now feels unsafe returning to the park with her children, aged 6 and 11, due to the traumatic experience. The racist attack has left Moorhouse, who has dedicated over a decade of service to the NHS, shaken and concerned for her family's wellbeing.
