21 Jul
Summary
- Woman tried to set herself on fire over illegal land occupation
- Police officer intervened and stopped her from self-immolating
- Woman claimed influential men had illegally occupied her land

Earlier this week, on Monday morning, police in Lucknow prevented a tragic suicide attempt by a local woman. The woman, identified as Kalawati Lal from the nearby village of Unnal, was spotted by Sub-inspector Shailesh of the Gautampalli police station pouring an inflammable substance on herself and attempting to set herself on fire.
Kalawati claimed that some influential men in her village had illegally occupied her 15 biswa of land. Despite repeatedly raising her grievances at various platforms, no action had been taken to address the issue. Feeling helpless and desperate, she had resorted to the extreme measure of self-immolation.
Fortunately, the alert police officer intervened promptly and stopped Kalawati from carrying out her suicide bid. With the assistance of a female constable, Kalawati was then sent to the hospital for medical attention.

Authorities have since registered an FIR against Kalawati under sections related to attempted suicide and obstructing a public servant from performing their duty. The incident highlights the need for effective grievance redressal mechanisms to prevent vulnerable individuals from resorting to such desperate measures.
