  • Police arrested the gang, found white powder was baking soda, not MDMA

In a recent incident, a gang of six individuals, including a woman, was arrested by the Yelahanka police in Bengaluru for allegedly extorting ₹2 lakh from a tech worker in a honeytrap case.

According to the police, the woman, identified as Sangeeta Sahni, befriended the victim, Rakesh Reddy, on the dating app Bumble on July 17. They later met at a mall near the Yelahanka police station, and Sangeeta took Reddy to a house in Ramagondanahalli, where they drank alcohol.

While they were at the house, a group of four people entered and accused them of using drugs. The gang then produced a packet of white powder, claiming it was MDMA, and threatened to get Reddy arrested for drug peddling. They subsequently extorted ₹2 lakh from him online.

The police, upon receiving the complaint, traced the account number to which the money was transferred and, with the help of call details records and CCTV footage, apprehended the gang. The investigation revealed that the white powder was not MDMA, but rather baking soda.

The arrested individuals are Sangeeta Sahni, Sharanabasappa Baliger, Raju Maane, Shyam Sundar, Abhishek, and Beerbal Majjagi. Sharanabasappa was allegedly involved in a similar honeytrap case in the past, and the group had rented the house in Ramagondanahalli to carry out their scheme.

The police believe the gang may have targeted other victims, and they are currently reaching out to potential victims to gather more information.
