Woman Vanishes for 24 Years, Found Alive
8 Mar
Summary
- Woman missing since 2001 found alive in February 2026.
- She left voluntarily due to domestic issues and depression.
- Authorities found her after a new lead in a national database.

Michele Hundley Smith, 63, who was reported missing in December 2001, was located alive on February 20, 2026, within North Carolina. The Rockingham County Sheriff's Office confirmed she left her family voluntarily, citing “ongoing domestic issues.”
Clinical psychologist Dr. Stephanie Johnson suggested that Smith may have been experiencing major depressive disorder and alcohol abuse, which can worsen depressive symptoms. These compounded struggles may have led Smith to believe disappearance was her only option.
Smith, then 38, disappeared after leaving her children at home in Eden, North Carolina, on December 9, 2001, to go Christmas shopping. Her vehicle was never found, and she did not return home. Her husband reported her missing later that month.
