In Fort St. John Supreme Court, a 21-year-old woman received a two-year jail sentence for an impaired driving incident that resulted in death. The accident occurred on June 30, 2023, when a pickup truck driven by Makenzee Lynn Doonan-Scott rolled over in Hudson's Hope, B.C. Tragically, her boyfriend, Ashton Attachie, who was 18 at the time, died at the scene.
Doonan-Scott, who also pleaded guilty to impaired driving causing bodily harm, expressed deep remorse in a letter read during her sentencing hearing. She described profound grief and self-hatred following the incident. The crash left another passenger with severe injuries, including a lacerated liver and a fractured pelvis.
During the hearing, Ashton Attachie's mother read a victim impact statement, calling her son her "first love" and expressing the immense pain of his loss. In a remarkable act, she also conveyed forgiveness towards Doonan-Scott. The judge acknowledged the palpable grief in the courtroom and the profound, far-reaching consequences of the crash.
Following the jail sentences, Doonan-Scott will be subject to a three-year driving prohibition. The court noted her blood alcohol concentration was significantly over the legal limit when she failed to navigate a turn, leading to the vehicle sliding over an embankment.
