A woman has been sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison for fabricating rape allegations against ten men. Stacey Sharples, 31, of Farnworth in Bolton, pleaded guilty to ten counts of perverting the course of justice at Bolton Crown Court.
The false allegations were made over a six-year period, from 2013 to 2019. Greater Manchester Police confirmed that most of the accused men were arrested and some underwent intimate examinations as part of the investigation.
The impact on the falsely accused was profound. Many lost their jobs or partners, experienced estrangement from family and friends, and suffered declines in their mental health after being falsely branded as rapists.
Detective Sergeant Steven Gilliland highlighted that police took the initial allegations seriously, pursuing all leads. However, as evidence emerged that contradicted Sharples's accounts, and considering the desire for justice from the wrongly accused, it became clear the reports were untrue, leading to criminal charges against Sharples.
