An inquest has been opened into the death of Sylvia Phillips, an 89-year-old woman found deceased in a freezer at her Porthcawl residence. Officers from South Wales Police discovered Ms. Phillips on February 17, 2026, after responding to concerns for her welfare at the Poplar Crescent property. Senior Coroner Graeme Hughes presided over the opening of the inquest at Pontypridd Coroner's Court. A post-mortem examination has been conducted, but a provisional cause of death remains undetermined as further investigations are required. The inquest was adjourned for a later date. Ms. Phillips' son, Christopher Phillips, aged 60, was arrested shortly after the discovery of his mother's body.
