A Massachusetts woman, Shannon Wilson, is facing charges after allegedly faking her own death from cancer to avoid legal repercussions. Wilson appeared in Plymouth District Court on Tuesday, where prosecutors detailed the indictment against her. The 45-year-old is accused of fabricating her demise to evade ongoing cases from 2022-2023, which include operating under the influence and shoplifting charges.
Prosecutors stated that Wilson first claimed to have terminal brain cancer in 2022 during an arraignment for a DUI charge. She allegedly repeated this claim during a shoplifting arraignment. Her legal counsel later informed the court in May 2023 that Wilson had died, submitting a purported death certificate from Rhode Island. Investigators, however, found that the doctor, hospice, and funeral home listed on the document had no record of her passing, confirming the document as a fake.
Following the purported announcement of her death, the individual who posted Wilson's $400 bail recovered the funds. Weeks later, prosecutors claim Wilson reappeared and allegedly admitted to faking her death to this same individual. She also allegedly deceived her ex-fiancé, with whom she resided in Plymouth. Wilson pleaded not guilty to charges including furnishing false identifying information and obstruction of justice, and is currently being held on $50,000 bail.
