A key witness in the ongoing murder trial of Michael Smillie testified that she lent her car believing the victim, Taya Sinclair, would be released. Sinclair was reportedly lured to a Saskatoon house where she was confined against her will and later killed in March 2022. The witness described being at a drug scene where Sinclair was present and bleeding, feeling uneasy about the situation.
The boyfriend of Taya Sinclair was also targeted, lured to an apartment, tied up, and beaten before being taken to a drug dealer's residence. His phone was used to lure Sinclair there too, in hopes she had money. The boyfriend was eventually released, but Sinclair was taken to Smillie's house and confined in the basement before her death.
Another individual, Stephanie Halkett-Stevenson, who pleaded guilty to manslaughter in Sinclair's death, is currently serving an 18-year sentence. The witness's car was also used to transport Sinclair's body to Prince Albert, where it was dumped and set on fire. Halkett-Stevenson's testimony was interrupted due to illness.
